CAREER DEVELOPMENT

AABPA aims to foster career development through interaction among members, many of whom work at the top levels of their profession; through monthly, informal discussions featuring well-known experts; and through twice-yearly symposia that attract the entire membership and invited guests. We also maintain a jobs forum, where employers can post job notices and job-seekers can develop leads.

OVER 200 ATTEND FALL, 2009, SYMPOSIUM

More than 200 peopLe crowded into the ballroom at the Capital Hilton Hotel November 24th to hear CBO Director Elmendorf explain the implications of current budget trends and the challenges that face budget policymakers. His address was supplemented by breakout sessions on subjects as diverse as new networking tools and the Stimulus Bill. In the lobby, U.S. Marines collected many toys and contributions for the highly acclaimed Toys for Tots program.

We shall be posting notes and slides from the symposium as soon as they become available. Watch this space for further announcements.

PROGRAM MEETINGS

AABPA maintains an active series of brownbag lunch programs featuring experts in public budgeting and program analysis. The programs are designed to impart specialized and highly practical knowledge on complex budget/policy issues, and to give AABPA members a chance for direct and informal contact with colleagues and with recognized authorities in the field.

CPE credits are available for our monthly programs, as well as the seminars. Just scroll to the bottom of the Program announcement for the CPE credit form.

We welcome suggestions for future programs. Please send them to AABPA@aol.com, with subject heading "Monthly Program Suggestion."

Presentation Summary

Few documents are as intimidating as the federal budget books, which provide an overwhelming amount of data about government revenues and spending. New data visualization methods can leverage people's natural ability to absorb visual information. The presentation will show how data visualization techniques can illuminate the structure of the federal budget.
